We’ve been playing long enough with a few different groups of friends that we always clarify this rule at the start… and with the more hardcore gamers the choice is often to house rule it back to the old way! I guess it is possible for a player to pass first every other winter to grab that spot, but I don’t think it’s necessarily to their advantage, as they don’t get any wake-up bonuses from going first (and they’ll go last in every other year).
