The Thin Man is directed by W. S. Van Dyke and co-written by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich. I’ve owned this film on VHS, then laserdisc, then DVD, but I had resigned myself to never being able to experience it as I assume it looked when it was for first released to theaters some 85 years ago.
The quality belies the film's age, avoiding the stiltedness of so many 30's films, and you can see the leads' enjoyment of the script and one another's often almost spontaneously dialogued performances. Nuts! Woody Van Dyke for recognizing that Powell and Loy were ideal together and for getting the studio s okay by promising to shoot this splendid adaptation of Dashiell Hammett s novel in three weeks. It is a perfect date night movie, even if your not a who-dun-it fan.
